Paper Bag Kite

Paper Bag Kite

[20 Minutes]

Throw your grocery bag to the wind as you and your child enjoy this kite-flying activity!

You'll need:

• paper grocery or lunch bags • string • ribbon (several pieces each 2 feet long) • stickers (seasonal, dots, stars, etc.) • stapler (ADULT USE ONLY) • hole punch (ADULT USE ONLY)

What to do:

  1. Punch two holes on opposite sides of the grocery bag. Thread a 2-ft length of string and tie it for a handle.
  2. Staple a few ribbons to the bottom of the bag for kite tails.
  3. Invite your child to place stickers randomly on the bag for decorations.
  4. Take your child outdoors and find a windy spot. Encourage him to start running as he holds the kite handle. When the bag fills with air, the kite should begin to soar and dive.
  5. As you and your child are flying the kite, sing this happy song. (Tune: "The Farmer in the Dell"):
The wind will blow my kite,
The wind will blow my kite,
As I run my kite will fly,
The wind will blow my kite.

My kite can fly so high,
My kite can fly so high,
Please look up in the sky,
My kite can fly so high.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What is the wind doing to your kite?
  • Can you pretend to be a strong wind and make a "howling" sound as you twirl around?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing large muscle skills and language skills.
