Pinwheel Sandwiches

Pinwheel Sandwiches

[20 Minutes]

Think Spring and wind as you make this fun "pinwheel" sandwich with your child!

You'll need:

• 4 slices soft whole wheat bread • 2 cans tuna • mayonnaise • rolling pin • can opener • bowl • spoon • plastic knife (for child) • sharp knife (for adult) • plastic wrap • Popsicle (wooden craft) sticks

What to do:

  1. Let your child help you mix the tuna and mayonnaise together for the tuna salad.
  2. Trim the crusts off the bread.
  3. Help your child roll each slice with a rolling pin to flatten.
  4. Let her help spread the tuna salad on one side of each flattened bread slice using a plastic knife.
  5. Roll the bread like a jellyroll and wrap each roll in plastic wrap.
  6. Refrigerate one to two hours, then remove the plastic wrap.
  7. Slice the rolls and invite your child to insert a Popsicle stick into one side for an authentic looking edible pinwheel treat.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What happens to the bread when you roll it with a rolling pin?
  • Let’s look at this pinwheel sandwich. It’s a round circle on a stick. What other treat do you eat on a stick?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is learning to follow directions and developing small muscle skills.
