Let's Walk to the Pond
[30 Minutes]
A pond is stocked with interesting things for your child to see. Find a nearby pond and invite your child to take a science-filled walk!
You'll need:
plastic jar camera (optional)
What to do:
- Invite your child to go with you to a nearby pond. Make sure your child stays close by and doesn't touch anything without your permission.
- Look into the water to see minnows or tadpoles. Help your child fill her jar with pond water to take home. Explain that minnows are small fish and tadpoles will grow up to be frogs.
- Sit together quietly and watch the birds, frogs, and insects that surround the pond area. Take pictures for lasting memories.
- When you return home with the pond water, help your child look at it under a magnifying glass to look for tiny creatures.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- What things did we see and hear at the pond?
- Did you see any frogs? What sounds do frogs make?
- Did you see any fish? Do fish make sounds?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop large muscle skills, listening skills, and observational skills.
