Let's Look for Animal Homes in the Ground
[30 Minutes]
Some animals make their homes in trees and some make their homes in the ground. Go for a walk and look for animal burrows.
What to do:
- Go for a walk with your child and look for animal homes in the ground.
- Encourage your child to look for rather large holes, but NOT to stick hands or feet down inside.
- Remind her that it is an animal's home and should not be disturbed.
- One animal that burrows is the rabbit. Rabbits live in warrens which have many rooms and more than one entrance.
- Moles also live underground. You may be able to find evidence of moles by the softness of the ground from the trails they dig.
- You and your child can find clues from different animals in your neighborhood by looking for gnaw marks on trees and bushes.
- Remember you are instilling an appreciation for nature in your child when you take these simple, outdoor adventures.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Did you find animal homes outdoors? Tell me about them.
- Where do the birds make their homes?
Useful information:
