Pumpkin Butter

Pumpkin Butter

[30 Minutes]

Stimulate your child's sense of smell and taste as you cook with pumpkin during the holiday season!

You'll need:

• 2 cups cooked pumpkin (canned works well) • 1 cup molasses • 1 tsp. cinnamon • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg • 1/2 tsp. ginger • 1/4 tsp. cloves • measuring cups and spoons • spoon • saucepan (ADULT USE)

What to do:

  1. Help your child measure the spices, the molasses, and the cooked pumpkin. Together, mix all the ingredients in a saucepan.
  2. Cook all the ingredients, stirring all the time, until thick and buttery. Let the mixture cool before using.

How to use:

  1. Help your child cut the bread into holiday shapes with cookie cutters; include a pumpkin, jack-o'-lantern, and fall leaves.
  2. Spread this "yummy" pumpkin butter onto the bread shapes to enjoy. Crackers can also be used.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What spices did you use? How do they smell?
  • How does this butter taste?
  • When do you see pumpkins?
  • Do you like this season when we have pumpkins? Why?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills and pre-math skills.
