Frosting Pumpkin Cookies
[45 Minutes]
Make a batch of large, round cookies and frost them to look like pumpkins. Have fun and experiment with mixing colors.
You'll need:
large, round cookies
white frosting
yellow and red food coloring
bowls
spoon
plastic knife
chocolate chips, raisins (optional)
What to do:
- Help your child place half of the white frosting in each of two bowls.
- Put the yellow food coloring on the table and next to it place the red container.
- Invite your child to place one drop of yellow and then one drop of the red food coloring in the frosting.
- Show her how to mix them thoroughly.
- Challenge her to name the new color and then set the bowl aside.
- Next put the red bottle on the table first and then the yellow one.
- Point and encourage your child to name them.
- Invite your child to add one drop of red and then one of yellow to the white frosting in the second bowl.
- Challenge her to mix it thoroughly and to name the color of the second frosting.
- Compare the two bowls. Talk about the color of the frosting. Talk about how even though the food coloring was added in a different order, the color came out the same.
- Together frost the pumpkin cookies. To turn them into jack-o'-lanterns, encourage your child to add chocolate chips or raisins for eyes, nose and mouth.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- How many drops of red did we add to this bowl? yellow?
- What do you think will happen if we add more red color than yellow?
- These cookies look delicious. Is there any one special you would like to invite over to share them with you?
