Flowers Inside and Out

Flowers Inside and Out

[15 Minutes]

Take a break and be a scientist with your child as you both explore the characteristics of flowers. (Make sure your child knows not to pick flowers without getting permission.)

You'll need:

• flowers • paper • crayons or markers

What to do:

  1. Encourage your child to look at a flower as it is on the outside and notice all the characteristics (color, shape, texture, wetness, smell, etc).
  2. Invite him to draw a picture of the flower.
  3. Take a flower apart to what's inside.
  4. Encourage your child to feel the different textures of the stem, leaves, and petals.
  5. Suggest that he squish the flower in his hands to feel how much moisture is inside.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How did the flower look and feel before you took it apart?
  • What do you like best about a flower?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity provides experiences for learning concepts related to plants.
