Art with Raindrops

Art with Raindrops

[15 Minutes]

The word art is derived from the Latin “ars," meaning skill. Art is a combination of skill and creative imagination. Art takes on many forms and mediums. Use coffee filters and food coloring to freely express yourself while creating a work of art. This "drippy" activity will keep you busy and even help to decorate your house on a rainy day.

You'll need:

• 3 baby food jars • coffee filters • food coloring • eye droppers • water • newspaper

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. Help your child cover the workspace with newspaper.
  3. Invite her to fill three separate baby food jars halfway full with water.
  4. Let your child mix 15 drops of yellow, red, or blue food coloring into each of the baby food jars.
  5. Place one coffee filter flat on newspaper. Using the eye dropper, ask your child to squeeze a few drops of each color onto the filter. Watch what happens when the colors get near each other.
  6. When dry, use these colorful papers to make butterflies by twisting a small pipe cleaner around the center. Or, gather the filter in the center and staple it to a green construction paper or pipe cleaner stem to make a beautiful flower.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What colors do you think will appear when all the colors are dropped onto the coffee filter?
  • How can we make these filters into flowers?
  • Can you think of anything else to make with the coffee filters?
