Fish Kites

Fish Kites

[30 minutes]
Catch a breeze with this easy kite idea. This kite is different from traditional American kites because it is more like a windsock in design.

You'll need:

• paper 8 1/2 x 11 inches • colorful tissue paper • tape or stapler • markers • string or yarn • glue • crepe paper streamers

What to do:

  1. Ask your child to roll the paper into a cylinder and to tape the short edges together.
  2. Let your child decide where the fish head will be and then let him add the eyes with the marker on either side of the cylinder.
  3. Invite him to staple or tape some string to the top to form a hanging or carrying loop.
  4. Encourage him to cut out tissue paper shapes to make fish scales and glue them onto the paper cylinder.
  5. Let him staple or tape on crepe paper streamers to catch the wind.
  6. You can tie a long string to the loop and let your child run with the fish kite on a windy day.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Where would you like to display your kite?
  • How will the kite tell you which way the wind is blowing?
