Balloon Tennis

Balloon Tennis

[20 Minutes]

The object of this game is to keep the balloon up in the air as long as possible without letting it pop or touch the ground. This fun twist on tennis helps improve hand/eye coordination and improve cardio-vascular endurance; especially if you and your child can keep the balloon up in the air for a long time. A bit of a breeze will add lots of giggles and a challenge.

You'll need:

• 3 or 4 balloons • 2 tennis or badminton rackets • even ground such as a driveway or field without bumps or holes

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you’ll need.
  3. Check the ground to be sure there is no glass, potentially dangerous dips, or obstacles in the terrain. You both will be looking upward a lot.

How to play:

  1. Let your child decide who will be the server.
  2. Begin by hitting the balloon back and forth, chasing it wherever it goes.
  3. Count how many times you and your child can hit the balloon without popping it or letting it touch the ground.
  4. When it pops or hits the ground, begin again and see if you can beat your last record.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How many times do you think we can hit the balloon without letting it touch the ground?
  • Do you think we could play this game with a water balloon? Would that be harder or easier? Why?
