Cheesy Bagel Broil

Cheesy Bagel Broil

[20 Minutes]

Historians debate the origins of the bagel. Some credit a Viennese baker for making the bagel to celebrate the victory of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. The bread was made to look like a "beugal," German for stirrup. The story tells us the liberated Viennese clung to the king's stirrups as he rode by. It is also thought that in Krakow, in 1610, bagels were given as gifts to women in childbirth. The circular shape of the bagel symbolized a continuous life cycle and good luck. Use bagels combined with these healthy ingredients to make this tasty snack.

You'll need:

• 1 bagel sliced • 1 tsp. margarine • 1/2 apple, sliced • 2 slices of cheddar cheese

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Toast the bagel lightly.
  4. Let your child spread margarine while it is still hot.
  5. Invite her to top each bagel half with the apple slices and place a piece of the cheese on top of apples.
  6. Place under the broiler, or in a toaster oven until cheese is bubbling. Allow to cool for a minute before eating.
  7. Together, enjoy your snack.
