A Tall and Short Walk

A Tall and Short Walk

[20 Minutes]

Go on a short walk together and help your child learn about the words "short and tall"!

You'll need:

• yarn, string or ribbon

What to do:

  1. Measure your child with the string. Cut out a length of string the same as the height of your child. Show him the string. "Look how tall you are!"
  2. Invite your child to go outside with you and see what things are taller and shorter than he is. Look at flowers, trees, pets, rocks, and so on.
  3. Together measure them against the string or your child himself. Talk about each object and whether it is taller or shorter than he is.
  4. Continue to use the words until your child is comfortable using them.
  5. Back inside, let your child look for things that he thinks are taller or shorter or the same as he is. Check out each one to see if he is right.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Did we see lots of things that are taller than you? Did we see things that were shorter than you? What did we see that was taller?
  • Can you think of a person taller than you? A person shorter than you? Do you like being tall or short?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop observational and measurement skills.
