Community Helpers Headbands

Community Helpers Headbands

[20 Minutes]

Does your child like to pretend? Make these headbands together and you'll be off on adventures as community helpers.

You'll need:

• 1 brown paper grocery sack • paper plates • crayons • child safety scissors • masking tape • stapler

What to do:

  1. Begin by talking about people who have special jobs in your community such as firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, postal workers, and so on.
  2. Invite your child to think of one that she would like to be. Then make a headband together.
  3. Lay a paper grocery bag flat. Cut across the bag so the strip is 2 inches wide. Place this paper ring around your child's head, fold it to fit and then staple it. (Cover all staples with tape for safety.)
  4. Offer your child a paper plate and ask her to choose whether she wants to use the whole plate or to cut it in half. Encourage her to use crayons to decorate the community helper's "hat."
  5. Staple the paper plate to the headband.

How to use:

Challenge your child to pretend to do some of the jobs of the community helper she has chosen. Ask questions or give suggestions of things to do.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What are some things that this community helper does each day? How does this help people?
  • What would you like to be when you grow up? Do you know anyone who does that job?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop language skills and social skills.
