Candy Cane Cookies

The holiday season is a time of wonderful smells, colors, and tastes. Take time with your child to create some fun treats!
You'll need:
1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking powder 2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. vanilla red food coloring bowl spoon measuring cup and spoons cookie sheet
What to do:
- Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl.
- Invite your child help you add the egg, salt, baking powder and vanilla. Mix well.
- Fold in the 2 cups of flour gradually.
- Divide this recipe in half, adding red food coloring to half the dough.
- Help your child roll a "snake" of red dough about 3 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. Repeat the same procedure with the white dough.
- Help him twist the two strips together shaping it into a candy cane.
- If the cookies are not shaped perfectly, that's OK. The process is more important than the end result.
- Bake the cookies in a 350 degree F. oven for 7-10 minutes.
