Candy Cane Cookies

Candy Cane Cookies

[60 Minutes]

The holiday season is a time of wonderful smells, colors, and tastes. Take time with your child to create some fun treats!

You'll need:

• 1/2 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 egg • 1/2 tsp. salt • 2 tsp. baking powder • 2 cups flour • 1/2 tsp. vanilla • red food coloring • bowl • spoon • measuring cup and spoons • cookie sheet

What to do:

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Invite your child help you add the egg, salt, baking powder and vanilla. Mix well.
  3. Fold in the 2 cups of flour gradually.
  4. Divide this recipe in half, adding red food coloring to half the dough.
  5. Help your child roll a "snake" of red dough about 3 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. Repeat the same procedure with the white dough.
  6. Help him twist the two strips together shaping it into a candy cane.
  7. If the cookies are not shaped perfectly, that's OK. The process is more important than the end result.
  8. Bake the cookies in a 350 degree F. oven for 7-10 minutes.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Can you roll "snakes" with this dough?
  • Does this cookie dough feel the same as play dough?
  • What colors did we use to make the candy cane cookies?
  • Do they look like real candy canes?
  • Did you have fun making cookies?
