Clothespin Elf
[20 Minutes]
Remember wooden clothespins? Most children today don't know what they were used for. Buy a bag for projects and share washday memories with your child as well as create this ornament, puppet or doll.
You'll need:
peg-style clothespin pipe cleaner felt tip marker construction paper felt scraps fabric scraps tape or glue
What to do:
- Help your child cut out a circle from construction paper or felt. Cut through the diameter.
- Tape or glue the ends to make a cone hat.
- Invite your child glue the hat on the rounded part of clothespin.
- Help her use markers to draw a face on the clothespin.
- Demonstrate how to wrap the pipe cleaner around the neck of the clothespin to make arms. Use fabric and felt scraps to make clothes for your elf.
- Make several elves to use with block play or to serve as place card holders for your next family get-together. (Tip: Craft stores sell little wooden rings designed to fit on the bottom of the clothespins, so clothespin people can stand up.)
How to use:
- These little elves can be used as puppets, dolls, or plant decorations. Use your imagination.
- Your child can make a family of clothespin dolls.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- What will you name your clothespin elf?
- How would you like to dress your elf?
- Tell me something else you could do with the clothespin.
